KYOKO SEKINE - HOTEL JOURNALIST

山の上ホテル（Hill Top Hotel）の歴史は1954年1月20日、
‘西洋旅館’をコンセプトに、創業者、吉田俊夫氏により
そのドアが開きました。当時ホテル経営の経験などはなかった吉田氏。
そして、2024年3月、文芸に関わる人々に愛されたホテルが
静かに休館に向けてドアを閉めます。

2024年1月11日、その「山の上ホテル」である宴が開かれました。
歴代の総料理長が統括してきた‘食の山の上’を体現する、
懐かしくも誠実な味わいを共にしたい…と願う人々が集まる会でした。
休館を惜しむ声に包まれる時間でした。
私もホテルジャーナリストとして今年で30年、
次々と都心のクラシックホテルが閉館していく寂しさを何度も体験しました。
ドアが再開することを祈ってやみません。

谷川温泉～軽井沢～信州松本
谷川連峰を望む新緑の水上温泉郷／谷川温泉「仙寿庵」、
ずっと行きたいと願っていたこの旅館は山の麓の高級旅館。
清々しい緑に包まれて温泉三昧、美味探訪の1泊でした。

それから軽井沢を通り、一路、信州松本へ。
素晴らしい青空に恵まれて快適なドライブとなりました。
松本では、旧第一勧業銀行のクラシカルなビルをともなう
「松本・丸の内ホテル」。
伝統の建物は、「長野県史・建造物編」「日本近代建築総覧」
「登録有形文化財」などに登録されている歴史的建造物。
松本城のお膝元、ラブリーなホテルです。

Tanigawa Hot Spring ～Karuizawa ～Shinshu Matsumoto

「Senju-an」is a ryokan where I wanted to stay for a long time..
It is a period of fresh green season now, it was a comfortable Inn
surrounded by great nature.

And then our car passed Karuizawa for a luch,
we drove to Shinshu Matsumoto directly under the wonderful blue sky.

In Matsumoto I stayed in Matsumoto Marunouchi Hotel,
which is mixed style Classics with Modern,
a lovely hotel in the castle town Matsumoto.

本当に美味しい松茸でした～！
「ANAインターコンチネンタルホテル東京」の
日本料理｢雲海｣では、土瓶蒸しや焼き松茸、釜炊きの松茸御飯など、
紅葉鯛、秋味と呼ばれる鮭とイクラ、栗や胡桃など

トンネルを利用したワインセラーの入り口、通路は島の反対側まで続く。

淡島ホテルのワインセラーは、島を貫くトンネルの中に造られ、
ミステリーツアーにでも出掛けるような趣でした！

ある日の朝ご飯、地元産の野菜、納豆、人参ジュース。
土鍋は、野菜たっぷりの味噌汁（右にあるのが具材）調理中。

土地の旬の物を食す、これが最も自然で
理想的な滋養の食事です。
初夏の「里山十帖」は、山菜の終わりを迎え、
夏野菜の出始めの頃。
玄米ご飯と、無農薬野菜の食事タイムは幸せのひととき。

“SATOYAMA JUJO ” in the early summer, at the end of the edible wild plants,
Summer vegetables is coming soon.

その前日に祝賀会があり、そこで振る舞われた料理にびっくり！

信州は本当に食材の宝庫です。
山の幸、畑の幸、そして川の幸！
豊かな食材は､豊かな人間性にも繋がるのだわ～。

温泉も豊か、水も美味しい、アルプスも美しい．．．
永遠の憧れの地です。

On 25th April 2015 we are invited to the Grand opening Seremony
Of MYOJINKAN, which is a member of Relais et Chateaux..

Especially finger food at the party were excellent and very rich
Ingredients in Shinshu area.
IIngredients from mountains, feelds, and rivers,
Rich food culture makes humain being very rich as well.

Spa, water Japnese Alpes.. I really attracted since long time.

ホテルの部屋には､様々な「邪魔しないで！」を示す
カードや、紐や、スィッチによる掲示などがありますが、
特に、ドアノブやドアの専用ノブに掛ける表示に興味があります。
それは何よりも、ホテルやリゾートの心遣いというか、
オーナーやGMのセンスがそのまま表れているから･･･。

2013年6月1日､ヴェニスにソフトオープンしたばかりの
「アマン・カナルグランデ・ヴェニス」に泊まりました。

アマンでは、写真のように、黒い宝石のような
石のアクセサリーがそれでした。
まるでネックレスのようですが、それをドアノブに掛けておけば、
部屋に、「入らないで」「邪魔しないで」の合図です。

エレガントな客室アメニティは他にもありましたが、
ミネラルウォーターの瓶もお洒落ですよね。

Elegant Aman Style “Do not disturb!”

In a hotel room, you can notice various “Do not disturb!” signs like cards, cords and switches.
Especially I’m interested in the sign to be hung from a doorknob
since the sign shows the hospitality of the hotel or the resort.
In other words, it directly represents the sense　of the owner or GM…

I stayed Aman Canal Grande Venice, which was just soft-opened on June 1 2013.

At Aman, a stone accessory like black jewel was the sign as the image above shows.
It’s like a necklace, but if you hang it from the door knob,
it tells “Do not enter” or “Do not disturb”.

Though I found other elegant amenities,
it’s a stylish bottle of mineral water as well, don’t you think?

世界中でいろいろなブランドのバス・アメニティに
出会いますが、今度のアメニティは
初めての出逢いでした。

場所は東京のホテル「コンラッド東京」です。
リクエストによって3種類の中から選べるのですが、
ここに挙げる2種のブランドとは初めての出逢い。
パッケージも香りもなんとも個性的！
画面の左が英国発「Tara Smith」、
右はご存じ「Shanghai Tang」、日本では珍しいです。
コレクションしたくなるようなアメニティでした。

Sweet Bath Amenity

That was my first encounter ever though I had come across
many branded bath amenities in the hotels around the world.

It was at Conrad Tokyo.
You can choose one from three different brands, but
I have never seen the two brands of these in the hotels I have visited.
The packages and aromas are really unique!
The left one is Tara Smith from UK and the right one is Shanghai Tang,
as you may have already known but rarely have seen in Japan.
They were the amenities I was tempted to take out from the hotel.

温泉は数え切れないほど行っていますが、
｢砂風呂｣は、生まれて初めての体験でした。
まずその重さと、けっこうな砂の熱さにも驚きました。
そして、もっとゆっくりと入るものかと思ったら、
ここ古湯温泉では20分が普通とか。
外気温のとても低い日だったので
30分ほど入り、汗だくになりました。
後で身体が軽くなり、とても気持ちが良かったです。

A Sand Bath at Furuyu Hot Spring in ONCRI

Taking a sand bath was my first-ever experience though I have soaked in hot springs so many times.
I was surprised by the weight and decent heat of the sand.

And it’s said 20 minutes are normal when people take a sand bath here in Furuyu in Saga Prefecture, but I thought we took much longer.

The weather of that day was freezing outside, I took the sand bath about 30 minutes and I was covered in sweat.

After sand bath, I felt lighter and so good.

Certain day December 2012

子供達だけではなく､
大人にもいろいろと挑戦したいものは大いにあります！
トライしてみたい･･･と心から思ったのは、
「親子の北壁：クライミングウォール」でした。
昔、山女だった私の虫が騒いだわぁ～。
この壁はヨーロッパの北壁「アイガー」をイメージしたとか。
なんたって、私はその山の麓の村､グリンデルワルトで
働いていたんですから、熱くなるのも当然かも。
舞台は、星野リゾート「リゾナーレ熱海」でした。

　
One of the Amazing Activities in Resorts

Not only children but also we adults have many things to challenge!
What I enthusiastically wanted to try was the “North Face for Parent and Child: Climbing Wall”.
It inspired me a lot since I had been really into climbing.
I heard that the indoor climbing wall is associated with the north face of the Eiger in Europe.
No wonder that I got really excited with that, as I had worked in the village of Grindelwald,
at the foot of the Eiger.
The climbing wall is found in RISONARE Atami by Hoshino Resorts.

この9月18日から｢奥入瀬渓流ホテル｣に宿泊しました。
そろそろ林檎の季節になろうとしている矢先、
青森では36.1℃を記録するなど、日本各地と同様に
なかなか秋になろうとしません。

それでも、早生林檎が出回るようになり
ホテルの客室には「ウェルカム・フルーツ」として
林檎がたくさん置かれていました。

かごの側には小さなメッセージカードが添えられ、
「好きなだけお持ち帰りになってください」と。
青森の林檎は本当に美味しい！
青森の生んだ宝物です。

　
Apple Season

From September 18th, I was staying at "Oirase-keiryu Hotel".
With the apple picking season right around the corner,
Aomori recorded 36.1°C (97°F), and as with everywhere else in Japan, autumn is taking its time to arrive..

Even with the belated fall, the season’s earliest apples began appearing, and many of them were set in the hotel guest rooms as "welcome fruits"

The little message card by the basket read, "Please take home as many as you would like." Aomori’s apples are really delicious! They are the jems of Aomori.

最近の高級リゾートでは、庭にプライベートプールが
設置されていることは珍しくなくなりました。
多分、日本旅館の各客室に「露天風呂付きの部屋」が
生まれているのと同様な贅沢かと思われます。

でも、リゾートの客室内すべてにプライベートプールが･･･
となると多くは知りません。
マカオに生まれた「バンヤンツリー マカオ」の客室には、
すべてにプライベートプールが設置され、
しかも、プランジプールのような小さいものではなく、
5m×1.5mほどのゆったりとしたもの。
当然、客室自体も最低で100m²以上という広さがあります。

凄いですね、インドのニューデリーでは、
シティホテル内の各部屋にプールが付きが生まれています。
ホテルはどこまで贅沢になるのでしょう。

　
How Luxurious will Hotels Become?

Recently, it isn’t rare to find a private pool in the yards of villas at a luxury resort. This is somewhat of a similar trend as the emergence of Japanese Ryokan with “In-suite open-air tub”

But a resort with an in-suite pool in every guestroom… is hardly ever hard of. Each of the guestrooms in Macau’s “Banyan Tree Macau” is equipped with an in-suite relaxation pool, and these are not tiny plunge pools, sizable ones about 5m×1.5m. Obviously, the suites themselves are at least over 100m².

This is amazing.
In New Delhi, India, city hotels are now installing in-suite pool in each guestroom. I wonder, how luxurious will hotels become?

Hotel Amenities 2 -Delicate and Luxurious Amenities-

Aman’s popular resort, “Amankila” stocks its guestrooms with stylish amenities made of “shells”, fit for a resort by the sea.
Richness fills the heart at the touch, and they are very good to use as well.

It must be difficult to take in considerations of opinions of hotel’s architect, interior designer, general manager, PR people, and accommodation manager, but refined and simple amenities that perfectly reflect the taste of the resort fill the guestrooms with air of bliss and comfort.

エコ・フレンドリィを目指すことから、
シャンプーやトリートメントなどバスアメニティは
すべて瓶入り補充可能なものを使い、固形の石鹸もむき出しなので
持ち帰り用ではない。
でも、だからと言ってサービスを減らしているわけではなく、
部屋に用意された帽子やバスケット（写真）は、滞在中に
利用するだけではなくて持ち帰りも自由。
客室に用意されたアメニティって、なんだか理由もなく嬉しい。
増して、それがセンスの良い素敵なものだと、
すごく得した気分になるのは私だけかしら・・・？

A word from Amanusa Resort in Nusa Dua, Bali! This environmentally friendly hotel uses shampoo and conditioner in refillable bottles, and the bar soaps are not packaged, so the bath amenities are not meant to be souvenirs. But that does not mean there is less of a service. The basket and the straw hat (photo) placed in the guestrooms are for the guests to use during their stay, and free to take home. Guestroom amenities are great, but am I the only one who thinks it’s a bonus when they are tasteful?

Do you know what a concierge does at a hotel?

He is the front man of the guest relations and from his desk at the reception area, he will take care of the guests with questions or requests to make the hotel stay a pleasant one.

In European hotels, it is said that,“an excelent hotel always has a capable concierge.” In Japan, concierges are becoming more common at top-class hotels as well.

Next time you see a concierge, take a closer look at the his jacket lapel.

If there is a cross-key pin, it is a sign that he is a member of Les Clefs d’or (Golden Key), an international concierge association, which gives him a global network to other concierges providing state of the art service.

I am always grateful for the spirit of hospitality these concierges display, and their willingness to solve everything in their capability, as they have helped me countless times when abroad.
