Do you know what a concierge does at a hotel?

He is the front man of the guest relations and from his desk at the reception area, he will take care of the guests with questions or requests to make the hotel stay a pleasant one.

In European hotels, it is said that,“an excelent hotel always has a capable concierge.” In Japan, concierges are becoming more common at top-class hotels as well.

Next time you see a concierge, take a closer look at the his jacket lapel.

If there is a cross-key pin, it is a sign that he is a member of Les Clefs d’or (Golden Key), an international concierge association, which gives him a global network to other concierges providing state of the art service.

I am always grateful for the spirit of hospitality these concierges display, and their willingness to solve everything in their capability, as they have helped me countless times when abroad.

4月初旬のこと、週末の金、土、日を利用した香港の旅に誘われた。
目的は、｢ザ・ランドマーク マンダリン オリエンタル香港｣に
新たにオープンした「バスチアン・ゴンザレス、
ペディキュア・サロン」を体験し、メディアにフォーカスするのが
ミッションの一つだった。
私は以前にモルディブの「One & Only Reethi Rah」リゾートで
体験済みで、ペディキュアへの意識がすっかり変わるほど
感動的だったのを思い浮かべながら、いざ香港へ。

世界的にも話題の「バスチアン・ゴンザレス」の
ペディキュアとフット・トリートメントは、ポディアトリストである
バスチアンの免許皆伝を受けた弟子達が、世界で活躍し始め、
香港にも上陸したというわけ。
足病学を学び、フットケア理論を確立したバスチアンの
フット・トリートメントは、夢のような結果を生むことで知られ、
赤ちゃんのように柔らかな足、マニキュアも塗らずにナチュラルに
ピカピカと輝くツメ、タコも魚の目も、角質もない
健康的な足へと磨き上げてくれる。

小さなトリートメントルームでは、フランス人の
若い男性ポディアトリストに両足を預けること1時間。
最初は気恥ずかしいし、緊張もするけれど、
楽しい話にあっと言う間の1時間が過ぎ･･･、
凄い、ピッカピッカでツルツルの足と爪が誕生。

足は健康のバロメーター、
このためだけに香港に通っても･･･いいなぁ。

　
‘A Dream Come True, Sparkling Healthy Feet’

In early April, I was asked to join on a weekend trip to Hong Kong.

One of the purposes of this trip was to write on The Bastien Gonzalez Chiropody & Pedicure Center, now open in The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. I had a pedicure that set a whole new standard by this salon at the One and Only Resort in the Maldives, so with high hopes, I set off for Hong Kong.

Bastien Gonzalez, a podiatrist, is gaining an international recognition for his pedicures and foot treatments, and his pupils who masterd his artistry are now opening salons around the world, including Hong Kong.

Bastien’s podiatry based foot treatment philosophy is known to take hard callus covered feet and turn them to healthy baby soft feet, with nails sparkling even without nail polish.

An hour in a small treatment room with my feet in the hands of a young French male podiatrist. The shyness and stiffness wore off, and was replaced with sparkling smooth feet and toe nails.

The feet is the barometer to one’s health.

Perhaps I can come to Hong Kong just for this…

福島のとある高級旅館の女将から、最近、メールが届いた。「あの日、改築中だった旅館は、そのまま震災後も改築を続け終了させ、素晴らしい旅館に生まれ変わったけれど、お客様が中々来てくれなくなった。食べ物も安全なものを仕入れ、何とか工夫して、スタッフ一同頑張っているが、このままでは･･･」という、前向きに頑張る女将からの悲壮な便り。

右にも左にも行けない不条理。ここで私に、何ができるだろう。

昨年の震災以来、せめてと思い寄付を続けてきたけれど、やっぱり客として泊まりに行くのが一番。女将も再来館して欲しいと望んでいる。時間を見つけて、なるべく早くに遊びに行こう。

　
I recently received a painful email from an OKAMI (mistress of the inn) of a luxury Japanese Inn in Fukushima. “Our Japanese Inn was in a middle renovation when it was struck by the earthquake. The renovation has completed, and we now have a beautiful inn, but very few guests. We have secured safe food and done everything but at this rate…”

It isn’t fair. There has to be something I can do.

Since last year’s earthquake, I have been making donations, but perhaps the best thing I can do is to return as a guest. I’m sure this will be OKAMI’s wish. I shall make some time to visit Fukushima again.

こんにちは！

ブログなんて一生私には縁がないものと思っていましたが、
多くの人に背中を押され、ハイセンスなクリエイターたちに出会い、
そして彼らの助けを借りて何とかスタートできることになりました。

ハワイのラナイ島から戻って間もなく、
今、4月1日をタイのサムイ島で迎えています。

海外取材や国内取材で、行ったり来たりの旅人生ですが、
そんな日常の中から、いただいている連載記事やコラムに
書かせていただく記事とは違う、プライベートな部分で感じたこと、
こぼれた話、ホテルの感動秘話、時には怒りの話など、
独り言のように綴っていければ…と考えています。

それを読んでくださり、さらに面白がってくださるならば、
私は充分に満足、幸せなことです！

Hello!

I never thought blogging was something for me, but I was able to embark with gentle nudges from friends, and with help from creative talents I’ve met.

I’ve just returned from the island of Lanai in Hawaii, and now beginning my April in Samui, Thailand.

My life is an unending journey of reporting across Japan and around the world, and I would like to share with you a side of my daily life that do not make it to my columns and articles. I’m hoping that this blog will be a glimpse of my private thoughts, out-take stories, unforgettable hotel stories, and even a bit on matters that anger me.

I would be delighted and more than satisfied if you are entertained by reading my stories.
