両手を丸め多様なロゴで知られる
環境ラベル「エコマーク」が、今年の秋頃から（未定）
日本のホテルや旅館など、宿泊業態に
制定されることになりました。

そのための策定委員会が今年の初めから何度も開催され、
環境に関する有識人、旅館屋ホテルの関係者、大学教授、
ジャーナリスト（私自身も出席）等が議論を重ねてきました。

エコマーク事業は、「日本環境協会エコマーク事務局」
によって運営され、活動の歴史はすでに
20年を超えています。

多くの分野ですでにエコラベルは認証されていますが、
サービス業態では初めてのこと。
一般の人々がエコロジーに関してより敏感になり、
エコマークが付けられたホテルや旅館を敢えて選ぶ、
北欧のような環境意識の高まりを期待しています。

The selection committee consisting of environmental specialists, hospitality industry professionals, academics and journalist (myself included) have repeatedly deliberated on the selection.

The Eco-Mark project, run by the "Japan Environment Association Eco Mark Office", has a history of over twenty years. Eco-Mark is a recognized label in a wide variety of fields, but this is the first time applying to the service industry. Like In highly environmentally conscious Scandinavian countries, I hope the public awareness of ecological issues will rise to a point where people will make an effort to choose hotels and Ryokans with Eco-Mark.

エコ・フレンドリィを目指すことから、
シャンプーやトリートメントなどバスアメニティは
すべて瓶入り補充可能なものを使い、固形の石鹸もむき出しなので
持ち帰り用ではない。
でも、だからと言ってサービスを減らしているわけではなく、
部屋に用意された帽子やバスケット（写真）は、滞在中に
利用するだけではなくて持ち帰りも自由。
客室に用意されたアメニティって、なんだか理由もなく嬉しい。
増して、それがセンスの良い素敵なものだと、
すごく得した気分になるのは私だけかしら・・・？

　
Hotel Amenities 1

A word from Amanusa Resort in Nusa Dua, Bali! This environmentally friendly hotel uses shampoo and conditioner in refillable bottles, and the bar soaps are not packaged, so the bath amenities are not meant to be souvenirs. But that does not mean there is less of a service. The basket and the straw hat (photo) placed in the guestrooms are for the guests to use during their stay, and free to take home. Guestroom amenities are great, but am I the only one who thinks it’s a bonus when they are tasteful?

縁あって何度も訪れている長野県松本市扉温泉の「明神館」でこの週末を過ごした。

宿を包む春爛漫の山にはちょうど山桜が咲き誇り、目映いほどの新緑といっしょの感動的な景色が展開されていた。ゴールデンウィークはとっくに終わっているのに、この「明神館」は、満室。人気の秘訣は言うまでもなく、環境、サービス、手を抜かない食事。そしてもちろん、良質の温泉も。

でも顧客達にはそれらは、お気に入りの旅館だから当然のこと。顧客にとって、クオリティが下がることにはとても敏感なのだ。

それでも季節に限らず、いつでも賑わっている理由は？ そう、いつも何かしら新しい感動があること。「進化する旅館」でありながら伝統も守る、進化しながらもクオリティが変わらない。これぞ信頼感！
　

Spring Time in a Hot Spring

I spent the weekend at the Tobira Hot Springs “Myojinkan” in Matsumoto, Nagano, a place I have a tie to and returned periodically.

The mountain cherry blossoms in full bloom and the bright new green of the spring were caping the inn with a gorgeous backdrop. Although the long weekend of “Golden week” has already passed, “Myojinkan” was fully booked. Needless to say, the secrets to success of this Ryokan are its setting, service, well-crafted meals, and the quality of hot spring.

But these are criteria patrons look for in any Ryokan (inn). The reason this Ryokan never have a low-season is because it always provides a new experience with each stay. Patrons are sensitive to even the slightest slip in the quality of the stay. An innovative Ryokan with long standing traditions, progressing without compromising the quality. Now, this is reliability!

素晴らしい天候に恵まれた‘五月晴れ’の週末、雪の残る北アルプス連峰の
全景を望む安曇野にいた。

思わずシャッターを切ったのは、英国のテムズ川上流で見た景色と重なる、
平和で、穏やかで、美しい光景。

新緑の眩しい木々、ワサビ田を縫って流れる澄んだ川、冷たい空気。

幸せな時間が流れるなかで、日本の田舎のあまりに美しい情景に、改めて感動した。
やっぱり、こうした光景は私たち国民の財産、一人ひとりが守らなければ･･･と思う。

世界中の人に見せてあげたい！
　

Picture Perfect View

On a weekend with perfect May weather, I was in the picturesque Azumino, overlooking the snow-capped Northern Alps.

I found myself shooting a photo of a serene, beautiful view, reminiscent of the upper reaches of Thames river. Sprouting bright greens of the trees, clear streams weaving through wasabi paddies, crisp air. In this blissful moment, I was reminded of the magnificent beauty of the Japanese countryside, and must preserve such scenery as its citizen.

This beauty is something I want to share with the whole world!

沖縄に旅をすると､誰でもやっぱりビーチリゾートに滞在したいでしょう？
それは当然ですよね、海はキレイですから。でも、那覇空港から車で20～30分くらい走った丘の上には、案外見逃されている実力派ホテルがあるのですよ…。

一見すると何でもない団体ホテル（失礼）や、「ああ、ホテルだ！」くらいの印象、確かに団体客も居ます。スタイリッシュでもないし、最高級リゾートでもないけれど、なんの、どっこい、ホテルとしては実力派！

リーズナブルで、穏やかで、スペースがあって、ロケーション抜群のホテルは、ビーチこそ近くはないけれど、お気に入りです。食事も､安心安全、美味しい。私はすでに4度も滞在しているし、この4月にもゆっくり2泊して、元気になって帰ってきました。

何を隠そう、ここは環境型ホテルで知られ、エコホテル、スパホテル･･･と、今をときめく形容詞ならなんでも当てはまる､知る人ぞ知る「美と健康」を求めるホテルなんです。名前は「EM ウェルネスリゾート コスタ・ヴィスタ沖縄・ホテル&スパ」といいます。

EMに関してはアンチテーゼもあるけれど、支持者は世界中に広まり驚くばかり。

EM技術のお陰で環境賞を受賞した海外のリゾートもあります。
実は、東京日本橋の下を流れる川には鮭が戻っているとか（ホント？）、その浄化作戦も､大阪淀川の浄化にもEM技術が活躍していると聞いて、これまた驚き。世の中知らないことだらけだわ～。

ホテルだってまだまだ知らないことだらけ、だから面白い。
私のホテルへの旅は、まだしばらく止められそうにありません。
　

Okinawa

If you are visiting Okinawa, wouldn’t you want to stay at a beach resort?

It seems like an obvious choice with the beautiful beach. But twenty to thirty minute drive from the Naha Airport, there’s a very well-rounded hotel quietly perched on top of a hill.

At a glance, you might dismiss this hotel as an ordinary hotel catering to tour groups It’s not stylish nor is it a top-class resort, and, yes,

tour groups stop there, and but don’t let that fool you because this hotel has everything you need!

Although it’s not close to the beach, this hotel is reasonably priced, peaceful, spacious, in a great location and one of my favorites. The food is delicious, prepared with fine fresh and safe ingredients. I’ve already visited there four times, most recently in April, and rejuvenated there with two nights stay.

If words like Eco Hotel or Spa Hotel are in your rader, you may know that this is an environmental hotel dedicated to “Beauty and Health.” The name of this hotel is “EM Wellness Resort Costa Vista Okinawa Hotel and Spa“. EM has its share of antithesis, but astonishingly, it’s gaining support around the globe.

In other countries, there are resorts that have won environmental awards through the use of EM technologies.

I was amazed to hear that EM technology was used to clean up rivers like Yodogawa in Osaka. and that even salmons are returning to the river running under Nihonbashi, in the center of Tokyo. There are so many things I don’t know, even on hotels, and that’s what makes me keep traveling. My hotel journeys will continue for a while.
